HERE ARE JUST 4 OF MOST EXTREME WEATHER EVENTS THAT OCCURED IN HAGERSTOWN OVER THE YEARS. WORST HAIL STORM 1917 June 6th Severe Hailstorm with hail as big as baseballs fell over the city around 4:00pm along with High winds. Severe Damage reported. Every window on the West side of buidings and houses were broken and severe Crop loss. WORST TORNADO 1947 June 9th It was early evening when the sky became a copper green then black, hail the size of walnuts began to fall then the funnel, a swirling,Yellowish cloud 2 blocks wide, dipped into Hagerstowns City Park. In a matter of minutes it had uprooted century old trees and wrought havoc to the park's tailored landscape. From City park, the menacing funnel traveled a distance of ten blocks through the southeast section of town. Acting in a hit and skip pattern the tornado did major damage to taller buildings, apartments and church steeples which fell in its path. Broken glass and strewn debris were everywhere along its route. The Arlington Apartments at the corner of Mulberry Streets recieved the greatest damage of any single structure. The Side of the building was torn away and the entire roof was lifted off and carried across the street where a portion of it was wrapped around the top cupola of the building on the northeast corner. After the attack on Hagerstown, the yellow swirl bounced in a northeast direction where in descended on Cavetown and then Smithsburg leaving the same type of damage in its wake. Striking and then skipping or bouncing as it did, the awesome cloud did practically no damage in between the areas of Hagerstown and Cavetown. This Tornado came to the area on the heels of a series of severe and freakish storms over the entire eastern seaboard beginning on June 2nd. Just two days prior to the local tornado the southern part of Washington County had been bombarded by hailstones the size of marbles. WORST HURRICANE 1954 October 14th - 16th Hurricane Hazel. This Hurricane refused to die over land and maintained alot of its strength after it came ashore in South Carolina with 140 mph winds. The eye passed directly over Hagerstown. The rains from Hazel in Hagerstown was only about 3 inches but some nearby surrounding areas recieved alot more with flooding. The winds were the biggest problem doing alot of severe damage in the area. Sustained winds of 60 mph with a recorded peak gust in Chewsville Md. of 92 mph for the highest official measured gust ever in this area. WORST SNOWSTORM 1996 January 6th - 8th SUPER SNOWSTORM BREAKS EVERY SNOWFALL RECORD KNOWN! Began 11pm on the 6th with 0.2" by midnight. Snowed all day on the 7th Storm gradually intensifies as day goes on with near blizzard conditions by evening with some white-outs at times with winds gusting fron the Nne to 37 mph. Snow depths on the 7th 7am 7", 10am 9", 12noon 11", 4pm 15", 9pm 23", Midnight 26". January 8th Heavy snow with blowing & drifting all night long. Snow finally ends by 8:30am another 9" fell since midnight with a Grand total from the 33 Hour storm of 34.9" This storm breaks the record for the most snow in a 24 hour period when 26 inches fell yesterday beating the old record of 25" set Feb 11th 1983. This storm breaks the all time storm total record. The 34.9" beats old record of 25" set Feb 11th 1983. This storm breaks the record for the most snow total on the ground either by a combination of several snows or one storm. The old record was 31" set Feb 8th 1961 from several snows. This storm also breaks the record the largest monthly accumulation ever and it came from just one storm. The old monthly snow total record was 33" in January 1925. WOW!
