Average Max 48.9 Average Min 29.7 FEBRUARY 1997 WEATHER REMARKS HAGERSTOWN 1E MARYLAND DAY 4th- Periods of light sleet and some snow today began around 8:30 am changed to all rain by late afternoon and became moderate at times .54" fell. 5th- Rain overnight midnight - 3am .11" fell. Dense morning fog. Became windy today WNW winds up to 33 mph. SNOW 8th- Snow today from 3:00am to 10:00pm varied in intensity from very light to moderate. 4.9" fell mostly a very wet snow sticking to everything with trees and wires bending from the weight of the snow. Water content .50". 9th- Extremely dense fog formed overnight with zero visibility as temperature dropped to a 20 F. low. 11th- Few snow showers 9-10am. 12th- Few snow flurries this afternoon. A rather intense snow squall this evening 8:40pm with wind gusts to 30 mph and a dusting of snow. SNOW / ICE 13th- Snow began 9:30pm with moderate snow and gusty winds from the SSE up to 23 mph looked very interesting for a while. 1.0" on the ground by midnight. 14th- Snow continued overnight and accumulated to 2.2 inches before changing to sleet then all freezing rain by 3am. Freezing rain and freezing drizzle ended by 9:30am. Only a light coating of ice. Water content from system .37". 15th- Some light rain, drizzle and fog overnight .02" fell. 16th- Some light evening rain showers with a little snow mixed in around 9pm. Became very windy with WNW winds gusting to 36 mph. 17th- Very windy overnight with strong NNW winds gusting to 38 mph. Became colder with a low of 25 F. VERY WARM / STRONG WINDS 18th- Warm day 62 F. 19th- Very Warm 67 F. near record of 69 in 1948. Strong evening winds to 36 mph and a very brief shower (trace). 20th- Warm 62 F. 21st- RECORD HIGH OF 72 F. beats 70 in 1930. Stong South winds Gusts to 33 mph today. 22nd- Warm 62 F.this morning. Brief shower around 9:30am .01". HIGH DAMAGING WEST WINDS blew in begining around 10:30am with many gusts to 45+mph with a peak gust of 52 mph at 10:41am. Became colder temps fell into 30's this evening. Tree and wire damage reported and some slight strucual damage from high winds. 23rd- Windy and mild today West wind gusts to 33 mph. 26th- Some light rain and showers 4pm - 7pm .11" fell. EXTREME HEAT / DAMAGING WINDS 27th- EXTREME RECORD HIGH OF 81 F. beats 67 in 1961. This was the second warmest day ever recorded in the month of February. Another incredibly warm day in February was in 1985 on the 24th when the temp went to 82. Very strong WSW winds this afternoon with gusts to 46 mph caused some more minor damage to trees, wires, roofs etc. 6th Warmest February on Record with an Average 39.3 F. The warmest ever was in 1976 with a 41.9 average
