Average High 44.4 Average Low 29.3 DECEMBER 1996 WEATHER REMARKS HAGERSTOWN 1E MARYLAND DAY RAIN / WIND 1st- Rain all day moderate to heavy at times windy from the SSW. Strong winds this evening and thunderstorms with heavy downpours as strong cold front moves in. Winds up to 35 mph. 1.62" rain fell today. 2nd- Rain between midnight and 3am .16" fell. RAIN / SNOW 5th- Mixed rain and snow began around 2:40pm. Periods of rain and snow till around 8pm when it became all snow and was moderate to heavy at times through midnight with 2.6" on the ground. Snow was wet and heavy sticking to everthing. 6th- Some periods of light snow after midnight till around 3am But no more accumulation. COLD RAIN / DENSE FOG 7th- Cold rain 8:30am till 4pm .49" fell. Extremely dense evening fog developed with zero visibility, then it turned to freezing fog as temperature went to 32 F. 8th- Extremely dense fog and freezing fog overnight with zero visibility. Temperature went to low of 26 F. and the fog turned into freezing fog and coated everything with a light white ice, including the roads and made driving extremely dangerous. Snow squall of strong intensity this evening 7:30pm-8pm with strong winds up to 25 mph and briefly moderate to heavy snow and some thunder and lightning. Just made the ground barely white. 9th- Snow showers during the afternoon, trace. 10th- Light snow fell 7:30am - 9:30am with 0.2" accumulation. RAIN AND DRIZZLE 11th- Periods of very light rain and drizzle today .04" fell. 12th- Dizzle and fog overnight and today. Rain became heavier late this evening with .35" by midnight. 13th- Steady cold rains moderate at times through 2pm then became intermittent and a drizzle for the rest of the day 1.50" fell. 16th- Few periods of drizzle today. 17th- Some drizzle this morning. RAIN / SNOW / COLDER 18th- Mixed rain and snow began around 9:30pm became mostly all snow by minight with just a dusting. 19th- Some light snow with some rain overnight. 0.8" on ground at 7am. Some periods of light snow today became a little steadier and heavier by evening with colder temperatures and increasing WNW winds. Another 0.5" fell when it ended just before 7pm. Became very windy and sharply colder this evening NW winds up to 33 mph temperature fell to 18 F. 22nd- Some very light sleet fell around 4pm and some very light rain 7-8pm, trace. 24th- Mild with periods of light rain and windy from the south. Then strong cold front came through this evening with strong NW winds to 35 mph and rapidly falling temperatures into the low 30's. Rainfall was .25". 25th- A cold sunny breezy day NW gusts up to 30 mph early am. 28th- Light showers and drizzle 3am-5am .01". 29th- Some light rain 8am-noon .09". 1996 HAD AN UNBELIEVABLE RECORD SHATTERING WET YEAR OF 76.66" OF PRECIPITATION THAT DROWNED THE OLD RECORD BY 2 FEET WHICH WAS 52.86" IN 1975. UNREAL!!!
