Average Max 84.2 Average Min 61.6 AUGUST 1996 WEATHER REMARKS HAGERSTOWN MARYLAND DAY 2nd- Thunderstorms with some sharp lightning and rather heavy downpours 10pm - midnight .52" fell. 3rd- Some more rain after midnight till about 2am and a shower around 6am .07" fell. Thunderstorms just to our north near the MD PA border 8pm -11pm produced vivid lightning display storms were nearly stationary and tried to inch there way this way but rapidly fell apart just as they got here some very close lightning strikes only a few drops of rain, tons of rain just over the line. 6th- A very humid day. Thunderstorm at 6pm moved in from the east and produced a intense downpour .58" fell in about 10 minutes this was very localized. 7th- Light showers this morning 7:30 - 9:30am .03" fell. Heavier downpour noon - 1pm .43" fell. HEAVY STORMS AND RAINS 12th- Cool and rainy. Rain began around 9am rained lightly most of day became moderate to heavy 8p - midnight 1.98" fell. 13th- Rain overnight till around 3am .30" fell. 15th- Thunderstorms with alot of lightning but very little rain 10:30pm - 11:30pm, only .04" of rain. The radar showed intense storms directly over us but nothing was happening this seems to be the case lately for some reason. 16th- Showers and light thunderstorms 7-8am .10" fell. Thunderstorm 3:45pm - 4:30pm .16" fell, wind gusts only to 23 mph. Once again radar showed massive storms moving in but not much happend here. 21st- Showers 9am - 10am .06" fell. Thunderstorms just to the west 5:30-6pm only a trace fell here but just west of town got well over an inch. 23rd- Hot and humid high of 91 F. first 90 degree day in 37 days since July 17th. 24th- Very light shower around 10am, trace. 27th- Thunder from stationary thunderstorms just to our east 11am- 1pm, no rain fell here but just a few mile to east got pounded with heavy rains and severe lightning. 28th- Very light shower at 4:30pm, Trace. August averaged only slightly cooler than normal, the temperatures were very consistent with highs in the 80s and lows in the 60s with no wide swings in temperature. Only one 90 degree day all month. Rainfall was above normal with almost all of it falling during the first half. With the thunderstorms just missing the Hagerstown area in the second half only .06" fell from the 17th on. Alot of fog, haze and humid conditions persisted all month. The three summer months averaged slightly above normal for temperature at 73.4 normal is 73.0. Only 15 90 degree days so far this year with the highest temperatures occuring in May which was 97F. on the 19th & 20th. The temperatures were very consistent all summer with no large variations. This summer seemed cooler than normal because there have been so many record setting hot summers recently. This was of course the wettest summer on record with 24.80" of rain for the 3 months, this beats the old record of 21.35" in 1970. Normal is 10.48"
